Construction work began on 27 September 2014 along the 8.5 km (5.3mi) stretch from Transport Nagar to Charbagh Railway Station. After computer of the construction work in less that three years, the commercial operation of the metro started on 5 September 2017. the city residents got the gift of traveling by metro for the first time.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited is a 50:50 joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh and 3 ambitious metro projects under its aegis, namely, Lucknow Metro, Kanpur Metro and Agra Metro.
The construction of Lucknow Metro Phase 2 begin
Construction of the second phase of the Lucknow Metro is set to begin in April. The new
phase will include the East- West Corridor, which will be 11.5 kilometers long and connect
Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. Twelve new stations will be built, seven of which will be
underground and five elevated.

January 2024: The Government of Uttar Pradesh Approved the construction of 11.65 km long East- West corridor between Vasant Kunj to Charbagh, Blue Line which is also known as Phase 1B, at an estimated budget of Ru. 5,881 crore ( US$690 million) in January 2024 with an expected completion timeline of 2029.
